Dr. Kwesi Akumenyi Quagraine
Experience & Activities
Dr. Kwesi Akumenyi Quagraine is a atmospheric and climate scientist whose research bridges advanced Earth system impact modeling and policy-relevant climate science. At the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), he investigates how climate interventions such as Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI) influence temperature and precipitation extremes, with a focus on Africa and other climate-sensitive regions. Using the Community Earth System Model (CESM), his work advances understanding of high-resolution climate dynamics and informs equitable strategies for adaptation and resilience.
Dr Quagraine’s interdisciplinary background spans physics, meteorology, environmental science and impact modeling, with a PhD from the University of Cape Town and prior faculty roles at the University of Cape Coast and University of Cape Town. His research has been published in leading journals including Nature Climate Change and Environmental Research Letters, contributing to global discourse on climate risk and geoengineering governance.
Beyond research, Kwesi champions STEM capacity-building and mentorship across Africa through collaborations with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). As an ISIE Fellow, he brings a systems-thinking approach to climate innovation, integrating science, policy, and education to drive actionable, inclusive solutions for a changing planet.
